StoryWalk Celebrates Fresh Air and Poets at Henry Carter Hull Library
Looking to entertain your kids during quarantine and get them out of the house, while keeping them safe? Consider bringing them to the newly installed StoryWalk at the Henry Carter Hull Library.
As Coralie Williams, the head of children’s services at the library, explained, “A StoryWalk is a picture book that has been taken apart and each page is laminated and attached to wooden posts. The posts are arranged in the ground in front of the library and families can walk down our sidewalk to read each page.”
Williams chose the book Frederick by Leo Lionni, which is about a mouse who is a poet who cheers up his family and friends during the winter.
“It is perfect for April—National Poetry Month—because Frederick is a poet, and for all of us who are missing our friends, family, co-workers, teachers, etc. during social distancing,” Williams said. “It is a lovely, feel-good story.”
This is the fourth time that the library has held a StoryWalk, and Williams said that she has already been planning for the next one, which will take place in the summer and feature a local artist and illustrator.
“It’s nice to get people outside,” said Williams.
Frederick will be up until June before another StoryWalk is assembled.
“We would love for people to come and read the stories and practice social distancing by going one at a time. And to send us a picture after!” said Williams.
The StoryWalk is actually a copyrighted idea that was started in Montpelier, Vermont by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Williams got the idea to bring the project to Clinton after attending a workshop with Ferguson.
“They showed different examples and I remember I really liked them,” said Williams.
The Henry Carter Hull Library has been closed to patrons since mid-March, but Williams said that she and several of her colleagues are still going in to work, while practicing social distancing while at work. The staff has been helping people with the digital services offered by the library.
“There’s still plenty to do here,” said Williams.
The Henry Carter Hull Library is at 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton.
