Girls’ Soccer Records a Tie, Girls’ Swimming Places Third at Conference Meet
Girls’ Soccer
The Guilford girls’ soccer team traveled to Morgan on Oct. 21 and tied 1-1. Tea Gambardella scored in the first half from a direct kick, and Addison Israel recorded 10 saves in goal.
Several girls were named to the All-SCC First Team for their efforts this fall, including Gambardella, Israel, and Sophie Pascarella.
Boys’ Soccer
Jameson Benben and Stephano Jarrin were named to the All-SCC First Team for their efforts on the soccer field this fall.
Volleyball
Sam Alberghini earned All-SCC First Team honors this fall for Guilford volleyball, and Alexa Kukta was named to the Second Team.
Field Hockey
After a decorated season with an SCC Championship trophy in hand, Guilford field hockey produced several All-Conference athletes, including Cassie Ward (First Team), Abbey DellaVentura (Second Team), Cambelle Jacobson (Second Team), and Zoe Tsoukanelis (Second Team).
Girls’ Cross Country
Ciara Davenport was named to the All-SCC Second Team for Guilford girls’ cross country.
Boys’ Cross Country
For Guilford boys’ cross country, Jackson Gould and Lewis Thoreen were named to the All-SCC Second Team.
Football
On Oct. 18, Guilford football traveled to West Haven and lost 39-0. Caden Hillier ran for 49 yards of offense in the contest.
The team hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on Oct. 25 and won 35-28. Hillier recorded 265 yards of offense and ran in three touchdowns. Aiden Ruotolo and Aidan Connelly had 10 tackles each.
The Grizzlies hit the road to Lyman Hall on Nov. 1 and won 41-0. Hillier ran in four touchdowns for Guilford and picked up 277 yards. Connelly had 17 tackles in the contest.
On Nov. 8, Guilford traveled to Amity and lost 34-20. Hillier ran for 135 yards and scored a touchdown.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
On Oct. 30, the Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team had its Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Championship meet and came in third place out of 16 teams with a score of 781. The 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of sophomore Abigail Fernandez, junior Liana Clune, freshman Ryan Cohen, and senior Kate Young, came in fourth with a time of 1:58.17. Senior Isabel Torello was the SCC champion in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.51, earning All-SCC individually. Junior Clara Matos da Cruz came in 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:04.79).
In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Sophia Chicarilli and Young tied for 24th place with a time of 2:35.68. Liana Clune took 29th (2:38.78), and senior Taylor Nowak placed 32nd (2:44.30). Junior Aislin Cohen took second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.67, earning All-SCC individually. Sophomore Muiriel Rader placed 14th (26.74), and junior Hannah Brown took 24th (27.29) in the 50 freestyle.
The SCC Diving Championship meet was on Oct. 26, and senior Jordyn Gould took third place with a score of 425.55, earning All-SCC individually. Continuing with the swimming portion of the meet, Ryan Cohen took fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.50), Young took 19th (1:09.46), and sophomore Gina Dong came in 32nd (1:19.40). Aislin Cohen came in second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.57. Rader came in 14th (58.63), Brown placed 18th (1:00.58), and Nowak posted a time of 1:03.95, placing 30th in the 100 freestyle.
Torello came in second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.38. Matos da Cruz placed ninth (5:37.68), Fernandez came in 10th (5:40.84), and freshman Nora Clune came in 18th (5:58.29) in the 500 freestyle. Aislin Cohen, Ryan Cohen, Rader, and Torello came in second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.45), earning All-SCC for the event.
Ryan Cohen came in second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.40, earning All-SCC individually. Fernandez came in 11th (1:06.16), and Chicarilli took 22nd (1:10.16) in the 100 backstroke. Liana Clune took 12th (1:16.04), Nora Clune took 21st (1:20.76), and Dong took 26th (1:24.04) in the 100 breaststroke. Torello, Young, Rader, and Aislin Cohen placed second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.09, earning All-SCC for the event.
