Gary Francis Allen
Gary Francis Allen, 81, of Ivoryton, passed from this earth on Sept. 5, 2024, at Gladeview Health Care Center in Old Saybrook, after a courageous battle with dementia.
He was born Dec. 15, 1942, in New London, to Beverly and Francis Allen. He grew up in Ivoryton and had a paper route at a young age for 100 customers, during his teenage years he was also active with the Deep River Junior Ancients playing the fife. After graduating from Valley Regional High School, he joined the Army National Guard, and in 1962, he married the love of his life, Isobel Cucinotta. Wanting to learn how to drum, Gary, his brothers, and his sister started the Sailing Masters in Essex. Also, during this time, he joined the Essex Fire Department, of which he held many positions while volunteering for more than 35 years.
In 1974, he moved his wife and sons, Michael and Jeffrey, to Ivoryton. He was a caring and kind father, getting involved with school activities and Cub and Boy Scouts. Gary was a well-known painter, carpenter, and handyman in the area. He was always happy to help his family and friends with projects in their homes. He was also the president of the Centerbrook Cemetery Association for more than 30 years.
Gary is survived by his wife, Isobel, of 62 years; his sons, Michael (Laura) and Jeffrey; and the love of his life, his granddaughter, Ashley; also his brothers, Clifford of Old Saybrook and Dennis (Debra) of Westbrook; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Beverly, and his sister, Patricia Gendreau (Ronald) of Leesburg, Florida.
In his honor, a military service was held on Sept. 17 at the Centerbrook Cemetery. The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice Nurses Ellen and Deedee and Gladeview Health Center for the special care they gave Gary.
