Baseball Earns Four Wins, Softball Wins a Pair
Baseball
The Hand baseball team traveled to Hamden on May 13 and won 2-1. Payton Powell pitched a complete game, allowing zero earned runs. He struck out seven batters to improve to 7-0 on the year. Nick Maynard had two hits, including a two-RBI single, and Nick Antonetti and Will Patla each recorded hits.
The next day, the team hosted East Haven and earned a 4-3 win. Brandon SanMarco pitched six innings and improved his record to 6-1. Johnny Reh pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Paul Calandrelli had two hits and an RBI, Derek Piascik had two hits, and Maynard went 1-2 with an RBI.
On May 18, the Tigers traveled to Cheshire and won 8-0. Ben Kuja, Tai Nuzzi, and Sam Markovitz all had two hits. Vinny Benevento and Calandrelli combined for five RBI, and Piascik added a double and walked twice.
The team closed out the regular season at Wilbur Cross on May 19 and earned a 6-2 victory. Freshman Hayden Whitcher earned his first varsity win by pitching 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run. Rocco Zagami pitched 2.2 innings, allowing zero runs. Kuja had two hits and two runs scored, Markovitz had two hits and an RBI, and Piascik had a two-RBI single.
Girls’ Tennis
Hand girls’ tennis wrapped up the regular season with a 7-0 road win vs. North Haven on May 13. Three set wins came from No. 1 singles player Loden Bradstreet (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) and Teagan Ariyan/Juliana Jorens at No. 1 doubles (4-6, 6-2, 6-3). Other singles wins came from Ella Helfrich at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3), Antoinette Lowy in the third spot (6-0, 6-0), and Emma Lee at No. 4, mounting a big comeback to prevail 7-6, 6-0. Mia Scott and Skylar Powers made quick work of their opponents at No. 2 doubles (6-0, 6-3), and No. 3 doubles pairing Hayden Agee and Kayla Johnson sealed the deal for the Tigers, winning 6-2, 7-5.
Softball
On May 13, the Hand softball team hosted Career Magnet and won 14-0. Alexa Young, Danielle Phelan, and Grace Hall each drove in two runs, and Bianca Pasquinelli drove in one. Ella D’Urso also had two hits in the game. Erin Cerny pitched two innings and gave up zero earned runs. She also struck out four batters. Grace Hall then pitched three innings, striking out nine and giving up no runs.
The team then hosted Branford on May 15 and earned a 9-2 victory.
The Tigers closed out the week at Cheshire on May 18 and fell 8-0. Taylor Ferraiolo, Pasquinelli, and Young each recorded a hit.
