Golf Grabs a Win, Baseball Wins a Trio
Golf
The H-K golf team hosted Old Saybrook on May 7 and won 178-189. Owen Staskelunas scored a 41 and was the medalist for the round. Cam Moore earned a 45, Andrew Crayton recorded a 46, and Axel Kolcio scored a 46.
Outdoor Track
On May 7, the H-K boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Clinton to compete in a tri-meet against Morgan and Valley Regional. The boys’ team defeated Valley by a score of 109-27 and Morgan by a score of 116-25 to improve its dual meet season record to 8-0.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Alex Frederickson in the 800 (2:16), Cash Smigel in the 1600 (4:49), Paul Birkmeyer in the 3200 (11:42), Eli Hamann-Shay in the 200 (22.5), Ryan Ruggerio in the 110 hurdles (16.8), 300 hurdles (43.8), and pole vault (11'0"), Luke Staskelunas in the 400 (53.8), Trevor Dixon in the shot put (44'2"), Luke Staskelunas in the triple jump (38'7"), Mitchell Kelsey in the discus (125'3"), Joe Slane in the high jump (5'6"), and Ryan Rafferty in the long jump (18'4"). The boys also swept all three relays, winning the 4x800, 4x100, and 4x400.
The girls’ team went 2-0 on the day, as they defeated Valley by a score of 77-72 and beat Morgan by a score of 86-59 to improve to 7-1 in dual meets this season.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Margaret Robinson in the javelin (82' 6"), Adrianna Garopollo in the pole vault (8'0"), and Chloe Felder in the triple jump (28'11"). The girls’ 4x800 relay team was also victorious on the afternoon to contribute team points.
Baseball
On May 6, H-K baseball hosted Valley Regional-Westbrook and won 9-7.
The team then played host to East Hampton on May 9 and recorded a 6-2 win. Riley Gordon scattered four hits and struck out five batters to get his first win. Joey Salafia singled, doubled, and drove in a run to lead the Cougars at the plate. Gordon and Blake Kamoen each had a hit and an RBI.
The Cougars closed out the week at Coginchaug on May 11 and won 5-0. Kamoen pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout, striking out eight batters. Todd Butler had three hits and drove in two runs to lead H-K at the plate.
