Olivia Palumbo and Kuenning won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Natalie Palumbo and Silva earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second doubles, and Hayden and Hinckley won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
“Great match today, Westbrook defeating Coginchaug 4-3,” said Head Coach Paula Fitzgerald. “Westbrook took all three doubles, and Coginchaug won second and fourth singles. The match came down to Anna Landino winning a third set tiebreaker 7-5 to put Westbrook over the top - a great job by a freshman to pull off a victory. The last match still on the court was the much anticipated No. 1 singles between Piper Remillard and Megan Bache. I don't think Piper has lost a set in her four years in the Shoreline until today. Megan took the first set 6-2, followed by Piper taking the second 6-1. The third set went back and forth, but Piper came up with the win 6-4.”
Outdoor Track
The Westbrook boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams have had a very successful season so far, with several athletes qualifying for the shoreline and state races.
Senior Leticia Pires qualified for the Shoreline Conference Tournament (SLC) in the long jump and triple jump, and she also qualified for the Class S State Championships in the triple jump. Pires is also making strides in the discus and javelin and hopes to qualify for Shorelines in those events, as well. Senior Kayla Prisley qualified in the 100 and 200 meter races for the SLC and will compete at the Class S State Tournament so far in the 200 and the 4x100 relay. Prisley is the anchor leg in the 4x100, relay along with seniors Hannah Freund and Jamie Fries, and freshman Grace Vincent.
Freis qualified for the SLC in the 200 and 400, and is part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, as well. Along with starting the shoreline and state qualifying 4x100 relay, Freund will also compete at the SLC in the shot put, discus, and in her main event, the pole vault. Freund had an excellent showing at Old Saybrook's Running Rams track meet on May 10, winning the pole vault with a jump of 10'. This tied the school record set by Halley Pierson in 2022.
Junior Lily Freeman is having a great season on the distance team and will compete at the SLC in the 800, 1600, and in the 4x400 relay. She will also be competing at the Class S State Tournament for the first time this year as well in the 1600, and she is working very hard to also compete in the 800 there, as well.
Sophomore Brooke Ouellette is also having a great season training alongside Freeman. Ouellette will compete in the SLC and the Class S meet in the 1600 and 800. She had a big moment at the Running Rams meet on May 10, smashing the 1600 record set by Avery Bauman in 2019 by 4.5 seconds. Ouellette ran a 5:37, finishing in the points with eighth place. She's chasing down Bauman’s 800 record next. Ouellette is also part of the 4x400 relay with Fries, Freeman, and Vincent.
Vincent is having a very good first season with the team, qualifying for the SLC in the 200, 400, 4x100, and 4x400. She will compete at states on the 4x100 team.
On the boys’ team, senior John Heringer qualified for the SLC in the discus. Competing in the 100 and 200 at the SLC are freshman Jeffrey Chiriap and sophomores Andre De Sousa and Ethan Angelini. De Sousa and Angelini also qualified for the Class S State meet in the 200, and Angelini qualified to compete in the 400 at the SLC.
Chiriap, De Sousa, Angelini, and junior Gabriel DeAlmeida qualified for Class S in the 4x100 relay, and sophomore Maurice Whelan qualified in the high jump.
