Softball Wins a Trio, Outdoor Track Starts Off Strong
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Guilford boys’ track and field raced against Lyman Hall and East Haven on April 10 at Lyman Hall. The Grizzlies split the tri-meet, beating East Haven (80.5-59.5) and losing to Lyman Hall (92-57).
Guilford produced several notable finishes on the day.
Andres Gutierrez won the triple jump with a distance of 43’4,” and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.9. James Oberg won the shotput with a throw of 48’3,” and took fourth in the discus with a throw of 124'7.
The Guilford 4x800 team, consisting of Mackinley Cho, Enzo Taverna, Alex Milano, and Coleman Love, won with a time of 9:01. The 4x400 relay team of Ethan Wienkamp, Max Freeman, Andres Gutierrez, and Coleman Love took second place with a time of 3:34.
The 4x100 group, comprised of Gabriel Grassi, Benjamin Glascoff, Stephano Jarin, and Trevor Ridley, came in second place with a time of 45.8. Additionally, Cooper Woods won the 3200 with a time of 10:47.
Wienkamp placed second in the javelin with a distance of 131'6, third in the high jump, and third in his debut at the 110 hurdles, with a time of 17.6.
Glascoff came in second in the long jump with a distance of 18’5, and fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.3. Coleman Love added to the strong showings by placing second in the 1600 with a time of 4:37.
Milano claimed second place in the 800 with a time of 2:08.3, while Timmy Hastings took third in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, and fourth in the shotput with a throw of 44’10.
Jarin earned a third place finish in the 200 with a 24.6-second run, and fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.8. Taverna took third in the 1600 with a time of 4:54.
Freeman took third in the 400 with a time of 52.6, and Cho took third in the 800 with a time of 2:13.5. Ridley came in third the 100 with a time of 11.6, and Jonah Cone took fifth in the 400 with a time of 58.6.
Baseball
On April 10, the Guilford baseball team hosted Xavier and won 4-3 on a walkoff. Mike Buccaro hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the winning run. Earlier in the game, Finn Matlosz launched a two-run homer, and Joe Tafro drew a bases-loaded walk to plate a score. In his second start of the year, Bryce Meder pitched 6-1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts.
The team then traveled to Milford to face Jonathan Law on April 12 and won 5-4. Lucas Ametrano had both an RBI double and an RBI triple in the contest. Adam Copeland pitched a complete-game, allowing zero earned runs without walking a batter, to notch his third win of the year.
Softball
Guilford softball traveled to Lyman Hall on April 8 and won 6-0. Sarah O’Brien went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Addie Smith went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Marley Falcone also drove in a run on one hit. Sophia Meade pitched a complete game shutout, recording 16 strikeouts.
On April 10, the team hosted West Haven and won 3-2. Adrianna Piascik picked up an RBI in the contest, and Ella Munson went 2-for-3. Meade went seven innings, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters.
The Grizzlies hit the road to Foran on April 12 and earned a 4-0 shutout victory. Guilford’s runs were driven in by Kennadie Tansey, Claire Ryan, Munson, and Meade.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team opened up the season with a split against Lyman Hall and East Haven on April 10. The Grizzlies beat Lyman Hall 85-52 but fell short to East Haven by a score of 88-57.
Top performers included sophomore Ciara Davenport, who won both the 1600 meters (5:45) and the 3200 (12:43). Freshman teammate Indy Pelliccio took second in both events in 6:03 and 13:29. Junior Ana Sadlon won the 800 in 2:39.3, and junior Ava Seseske was third overall in the 100 high hurdles (20.2). Sophomore Maya Kos-Graham also took third in the 300 hurdles in 56.7.
The girls’ 4x800 relay team (comprised of Sage Schroeder-Wright, Daniella Selig, Sadlon, and Juliana Montgomery) won in 11:02, and the 4x400 relay (Selig, Montgomery, Ava Hesse, and Camila Munroe) won in 4:36.6.
In the field events, junior Lily Sullivan was second in high jump (4'4”), sophomore Munroe was second in triple jump (28'0.5”), and sophomore Anna Hastings was second in discus in 67'3.”
