Boys’ Ice Hockey Grabs Two More Wins, While Wrestling Stands Out at Tournament

On Jan. 10, the East Haven Co-op boys’ ice hockey team traveled to West Haven Co-op and recorded a 3-2 win. John D’Albero scored two of the three goals for the Yellowjackets, and his first score was assisted by Griffin McGlinchey. His second goal, which was scored late in the first period, was assisted by Lorenzo Defilio and McGlinchey. Mike Savo scored the game-winning goal for East Haven in the third period, assisted by Ryan Bunnell. Mike Fritz manned the net in the victory, allowing two goals on 22 saves.
The Yellowjackets traveled to the Eastern CT Eagles on Jan. 13 and won 8-3. Defilio got the scoring started in the first period, assisted by Preston Cantele and Carter McGlinchey. Griffin McGlinchey then added a score later in the period, assisted by Defilio and D’Albero.
In period two, Savo found the net on an assist from Bunnell, and D’Albero added to the scoring too, with the assist being credited to Defilio. East Haven went off for four goals in the third period. These were scored by D’Albero on a Power Play (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey), Landon Cantele (unassisted), Shane Ruggiero (assisted by Josh Salvati), and Defilio (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey). Fritz allowed three goals in net, on 11 saves.
Wrestling
East Haven wrestling traveled to Shelton on Jan. 10, where they lost a tight, 42-34 contest. Jack Fletcher won by fall at 113 pounds, and Gonul Celik won at 120 pounds by a 13-5 major decision. Alex Dombrowski (157 pounds) won by fall at 1:16, while Joshua Rivera won at 190 pounds by fall at 4:51. Dom D’Ambrosio also added a win by fall at 285 pounds.
On Jan. 13, the East Haven wrestling team traveled to the Ellis Tech Duals. The team took a narrow 41-39 defeat vs. the host school. Fletcher won at 113 pounds by a 14-8 decision, and Tin Trinh won by fall at 138 pounds (1:48). Dombrowski (157 pounds) won by fall at 1:19, while Marc Gargano won by fall at 175 pounds (0:17). Two more wins were recorded for the Yellowjackets, including Joe Allen at 215 pounds (fall at 0:25), and D’Ambrosio at 285 pounds (fall at 1:01).
The team also faced Waterford at the meet and fell 42-38. Fletcher won the 113-pound bout by fall, and Celic won at 120 pounds by major decision. Zachary Sullivan (126 pounds) won by fall at 2:30, while Maddie Cooper (132 pounds) won by fall at 3:49. Trinh grabbed a win at 138 pounds by major decision. Dombrowski rounded out the scoring for the Yellowjackets, winning by fall at 157 pounds.
