John Duncan III
John Duncan III of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, passed away on Dec. 7, 2023. He was born April 6, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Elizabeth Job Duncan and John Duncan Jr.
After graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in Toledo, Ohio, John graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He then earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.
John spent his bachelor years discovering life in New York City. He alternated between cruising the city streets in his chocolate brown Porsche 912 and touring the country on his shiny black 1966 BMW R50, as debonair as James Dean. He was very unselfish, always taking time to help others, including several years as a volunteer reading to the blind. His altruism was genuine.
John settled in Essex, where he was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He loved Essex and its maritime history and spent many blissful days sailing the Eastern Seaboard, most often navigating his way to Northeast Harbor, Maine. For many years, John served as a board member of Gateway Council and High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, which he held near and dear to his heart.
John adored his family and officially adopted his two stepsons. Spending time with family was a priority for John and not up for discussion. If you missed a family event or reunion, you were sure to hear about it! An integral part of his family included his beloved dogs, of which he had many. He cherished their companionship throughout his life and theirs. He was a principled man who loved to have fun, was amazingly generous, and offered his opinion where wanted or not! He will be missed by all of us but especially by those whose lives he so very richly influenced. He lived a life of purpose, and we will all miss his guiding light.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary “Dundo” Olmstead. Survivors include his loving wife, Carolyn Crow Duncan; his sons and their families: Albert Wiegman, wife Susan and grandchildren Will, Parker, and Elizabeth; Christopher Wiegman, wife Dana, and granddaughter Lauren; his brother William Duncan and wife Peggy; nephews, Don and John Olmstead, Park and Will Duncan; and nieces, Joby Koren and Betsy Darden.
A memorial service will be held in Toledo, Ohio, at a later date. Online condolences at www.caruth-hale.com.
