Branford Sports Hall of Fame to Induct 10 New Members
10 people will be inducted into the Branford Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, Nov. 16 at Woodwinds in Branford.
The inductees are as follows: Brian Adkins (1990), who founded the Branford lacrosse program in 1999 and led the Hornets to the 2003 state championship; David J. Atkinson (1983), an All-League football player who went on to play at Western Connecticut State University; Daniel Aupi (2008), an All-American swimmer at Branford who went on to swim at Bates; and Alesha Amendola Bello (2002), a four-year All-State swimmer who was a major part of both the 1998 and 2000 state championship teams.
In addition, the inductees will also include James Balzano (2006), quarterback of the Hornets’ 2005 football state championship team and a member of the 2005 baseball state championship and American Legion state and regional championships; John Bysiewicz (1980), founder of JB Sports and an integral part of organizing the Branford Road Race; Niamh Cunningham Emerson (2002), a six-time SCC champion in track and cross country, who went on to run at UConn; Arthur J. Howe, a retired police officer and “Father of the Branford Wrestling Program”; Katherine Donovan (2006), a four-year field hockey starter who broke the record for most games played in program history while winning three state championships; and Chelsea Sheehan Yorlano (2008), a field hockey and softball star who went on to captain the Iona softball team.
The Hall of Fame will also recognize the 1998 Class L baseball team, 1998 Class M girls’ swimming team, and the 2000 Class M girls’ swimming team, on the 25th anniversary of their state championships.
