Alice V. Mitchell, 94, of Essex died Feb. 5 in hospice care at Middlesex Hospital. Alice will be missed by her family and her many friends.
Born in Santa Cruz, California, and raised in San José, Alice graduated with a degree in mathematics from San José State in 1946. She became a math instructor at the college for nine years. She taught night courses at San José City College and West Valley College for 17 years. In 1961 she became a teacher in the Campbell Union High School District, where she taught for 29 years and served as the district’s supervisor of mathematics instruction. In 1972 she earned a master of science degree in the teaching of mathematics from Santa Clara University. After retiring from teaching in 1990, she tutored students in all levels of math until shortly after her 90th birthday.
Alice married William Mitchell in 1946. The two raised their family and lived in San José, Campbell (1959 to 1972), and Soquel (1972 to 2003). In 2003 Alice and Bill moved to Essex, where they were visible many mornings walking together with their hiking poles down to the town docks.
Alice is survived by her son Bill Mitchell of Portland, Oregon; her daughter Sue Mitchell and son-in-law Doug Haney of Essex; grandson Sam Haney of Durham, North Carolina; granddaughter Amelia Haney of Branford; and grandson William Humrich of Fargo, North Dakota. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and her youngest daughter Joan Mitchell Humrich.
