Fix It
We have an emergency problem in East Haven on High Street between Main Street and the bridge. In an emergency, police cars and fire engines cannot get across the bridge because of the traffic jam. Anyone who has passed there between about 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. understands. Traveling South on North High Street is congested too, but traveling North is worse. The whole area is clogged with traffic.
I have been watching this clog for quite a few years. Congestion can be solved by extending the time the north light at the bridge is green for those traveling North. This is the process: There is a light on both the South and North sides of the bridge. There is traffic on High Street and traffic on Kimberly Avenue. When the south light turns red on High Street, Kimberly traffic moves onto the bridge. If, at this time, the North light can be extended to allow cars from Kimberly to proceed off the bridge, when the South High Street light turns green, cars can move across the bridge. Right now, those traveling North can’t proceed because the Kimberly cars clog the bridge.
I’m asking the mayor, police chief, and fire chief to call the State of Connecticut DOT traffic engineers to fix it. The congestion is dangerous; say nothing about irritating for drivers.
I know the other two lights on North High Street can be fixed too, but I feel I just can’t ask for everything. Wouldn’t it be great, though, to have those lights work in tandem with the bridge lights? There is a “trip” on the I-95 Exit and on Hudson Street, but traffic engineers can extend time to accommodate them.
