Hand Boys’ Lacrosse Falls in Semifinals; Boys’ Tennis Loses in Conference Finals
Baseball
Hand baseball played in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament on May 23 as the No. 5 seed, taking a 4-1 loss to No. 4 Lyman Hall. The team is now 9-12 on the season. Troy Piascik was named First Team All-SCC for his efforts this season.
Softball
Hand softball fell in its lone contest last week, taking a 3-2 loss in the quarterfinals to No. 3 Guilford as the No. 6 seed in the SCC Tournament. The team’s record is 6-15. Reese Ciecko earned Second Team All-SCC honors for her contributions this spring on the field.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Hand boys’ lacrosse began conference tournament play as the No. 3 seed on May 20. The Tigers grabbed a 12-6 first-round win over No. 6 Foran. Sam Sisk recorded four goals and six assists and Will Kleine contributed with a goal and two assists. Chase Docker also added two goals. On May 22, Hand faced No. 2 Cheshire in the semifinals and fell by a score of 15-5. The team is now 12-6. Sam Sisk and Will Kleine were named to the All-SCC First Team for Division I, and Alex Cushing and Ryan Xeller were named to the Second Team.
Girls’ Lacrosse
After receiving a first-round bye, Hand girls’ lacrosse played in the semifinal round of the SCC Tournament on May 22, taking a 15-4 loss to No. 3 Guilford. The team is now 11-6. Attacker Shawn Staak was named to the All-SCC First Team, as was midfielder Lydia Doraz and defender Coco Rourke. Addison Kosiewicz and Liv Catela were awarded Second Team honors.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis picked up two wins and a loss last week. On May 22, Hand hosted Amity in the semifinal round of the conference tournament and earned a 4-3 victory as the No. 2 seed. In the finals on May 23, Hand fell to No. 1 Fairfield Prep by a score of 5-2. The Tigers hosted Berlin on May 26 in the first round of the state tournament, defeating the visitors 6-1. The team is now 17-3 for the season. Elliot Booth was named All-Conference for singles, and Matt Vetter and Paul Fumex earned the honor for doubles.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis split the week, picking up a win and a loss on the road. The team traveled to Guilford on May 22, falling to their hosts 5-2 in the SCC Tournament’s semifinal round. The doubles duos of Libby Rogers/Ella Helfrich (6-3, 6-4) and Teagan Ariyan/Juliana Jorens (7-5, 6-1) recorded wins in the effort.
They hit the road to Deep River to defeat Valley Regional 6-1 in the opening round of the Class M State Tournament on May 26. In singles Laila Haraj-Sai (6-1, 6-2), Loden Bradstreet (6-0, 6-0), Antoinette Lowy (6-1, 6-0), and Emma Lee (6-1, 6-1) earned wins, and the doubles pairings of Rogers/Helfrich (6-1, 6-0) and Sofia Felgate/Mia Scott (6-0, 6-4) added wins. The Tigers are 14-6 for the season. Laila Haraj-Sai was named to the All-SCC team for singles, and Libby Rogers and Ella Helfrich earned the honor for doubles.
Outdoor Track
The All-SCC team members were recently announced for outdoor track. On the boys’ side, Nathaniel Kraft, Cooper Dunsmore, John Daniels and Kyle Hoffman were named to the First Team for their 4x400 relay team. Kyle Hoffman was also named to the Second Team for his 400 meters and Matthew Kasper earned Second Team honors for the triple jump. For the girls, several athletes were named to the All-SCC Second Team, including Annecy Vlieks (1600 meters), Redmond Sullivan (discus) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Alice Agovino, Vivian Glaser, Jordan Kells and Julia Coric.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Hand boys’ volleyball team entered the SCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed after a 3-2 win at home over Bridgeport Central on May 22. On May 23, the Tigers faced No. 4 Amity Regional in the first round of the tournament and lost 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-9). Court Lucas was named to the All-SCC Second Team for his efforts this spring.
