H-K Golf Wins Three Matches, While Boys’ Tennis Splits the Week
Baseball
Baseball snapped a seven-game win streak, posting back-to-back losses to end the week. On May 1, the Cougars hosted Cromwell in a 3-2 victory before playing host to North Branford in a 5-1 loss on May 3. Morgan defeated the home team 3-2 on May 5. The team is now 13-4 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis split the week, posting two wins and two losses to bring the season record to .500. On May 1, the team hosted Westbrook in a 4-3 loss. Eddie White (6-2, 6-0) and Joe Wessinger (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) played to singles victories. The doubles duo of Adam Livingston/Luke Frohlich (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) also recorded a win.
They traveled to Clinton on May 3 for a 6-1 loss at the hands of Morgan. Bryce Leiberman (6-1, 6-1) earned a singles win in the loss.
The Cougars rebounded on May 4, traveling to Deep River to hand a 5-2 loss to their hosts Valley Regional. Leiberman (6-1, 6-2), White (6-1,6-1), and Wessinger (6-2, 6-3) picked up wins in singles play. In doubles, Agostino Luzietti/Cavin Napoletano (6-1, 6-2) and Livingston/Frohlich (6-1, 7-6, 7-5) played to wins.
They rolled to a 7-0 victory on May 5, traveling to East Hampton. Singles players Leiberman (6-0,6-0), Wessinger (6-0, 6-2), Will Lirot (6-0, 6-1), and Frohlich (6-2, 6-2) recorded wins. The doubles teams of Luzietti/Napoletano, Saige Merwin/Joseph Castelli, and Thomas Young/Joseph Lucero all earned wins by default.
The team is now 6-6.
Softball
Softball sandwiched a loss between two wins last week, bringing their season resume to 10-4. The Cougars hosted cromwell on May 1, defeating the visitors 3-2, before traveling to North Branford on May 3 in a narrow 7-6 defeat. The team bounced back on May 5, facing Morgan on the road in a 12-3 win.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse grabbed a win in its sole outing last week to bring their season record to 9-2. The team traveled to Clinton on May 2, defeating Morgan 6-3.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse added a win to its season record. They traveled to Middletown on May 5, defeating Mercy 14-7. They are now 6-3 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
H-K girls’ tennis continued its tough season, taking a 0-7 loss at Westbrook on May 1 before hosting North Branford on May 3 and losing 3-4. The team is now 1-9 for the season.
Golf
H-K golf had a strong week, winning all three of its matches. On May 1, the team hosted East Hampton and won a close 185-187 contest. Declan Kessler scored a 42 and was a medalist, Colton Whiteley scored a 45, Andrew Crayton scored a 47, Owen Staskelunas finished with a 51 and Jacob Maier recorded a 52.
On May 3, the Cougars traveled to Hale Ray and won 179-195. This time around, Kessler recorded a 40, Crayton scored a 43, Whiteley scored a 47, Staskelunas scored a 49 and Maier recorded a 50.
The next day on May 4, H-K traveled to Old Lyme and grabbed a 185-205 victory. Kessler scored a 43 on the course, Crayton scored a 45, Maier recorded a 48, and Whiteley and Staskelunas each finished with 49.
Outdoor Track
On May 2, the H-K boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Old Lyme for a tri-meet with Westbrook. Both teams came away with two victories, as the boys defeated Westbrook by a score of 111-38 and Old Lyme by a score of 98-51 to stay undefeated and improve their dual meet season record to 6-0. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Alex Lara in the 800 (2:00), Jack Cozean in the 1600 (4:48) and 3200 (10:21), John Panzera in the 110 hurdles (16.8), 300 hurdles (44.3) and high jump (5’8”), Ryan Ruggiero in the pole vault (10’0”) and Ryan Rafferty in the triple jump (34’11”). The boys’ 4x800 and 4x400 relays were also victorious on the afternoon.
The girls’ team also continued their undefeated dual meet season, as they beat Westbrook by a score of 130-19 and Old Lyme 88-61. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (13.0) and 200 (26.9), Isabel Berardino in the 1600 (5:40) and 3200 (12:07), Delaney Aronson in the 300 hurdles (54.4), Leah Chester in the long jump (15’1”) and triple jump (31’11”), Ana Garcia in the high jump (4’6”) and Adrianna Garoppolo in the pole vault (7’0”). The girls also swept all three relays, as they won the 4x800. 4x100 and 4x400 races to contribute valuable team points.
