H-K Baseball Wins Four Straight, While Boys’ Tennis Splits the Week
Baseball
Cougars baseball continued its winning ways, adding four more wins. The team traveled to Portland on April 18, notching a 10-4 victory. They returned home on April 20 to face Coginchaug in a 4-2 win and East Granby on April 22, defeating the visitors 7-4. On April 24, H-K traveled to Old Lyme and grabbed a 9-5 win. The Cougars are 10-0 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
H-K boys’ tennis hosted Old Saybrook on April 19 and won 7-0. Eddie White grabbed two 6-0 victories, as did Bryce Leiberman and Joe Wessinger. Will Lirot won by default. For doubles, Will Lirot and Cavin Napoletano won 6-0, 6-0. The other two doubles matchups were won by default (1-0).
On April 21, H-K fell on the road at Old Lyme by a score of 2-5. Wins came from Leiberman (7-6, [7-5], 6-3), and Eddie White (6-2, 6-2).
Girls’ Tennis
H-K girls’ tennis traveled to East Hampton on April 18 and lost 3-4, They then traveled to old Saybrook on April 19 and fell 2-5 before falling 0-7 at home vs. Old Lyme on April 21. On April 24, the Cougars traveled to Coginchaug and lost 1-7.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse posted a pair of wins on the road last week to bring their season record to 5-1. On April 18, they faced Old Lyme on the road, pulling out an 11-5 win, and on April 20, they traveled to Old Saybrook and posted a 15-6 victory.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse posted a victory to stop a two-game ski. The team hosted Old Lyme on April 18, falling to the visitors 9-5, and they fell on April 20 to Old Saybrook 14-8. On April 22, the team played host to Mercy and notched a 14-3 victory. The Cougars are now 4-2.
Softball
Cougars softball’s win streak took a stumble after the team fell on the road after posting two consecutive wins. The team hosted Portland on April 18, posting a resounding 29-0 victory. On April 20, they traveled to Durham to take on Coginchaug in a 1-0 victory. They fell at Ellington on April 22 2-1 before facing Old Lyme at home April 24 and taking a 1-0 loss. The team is now 6-3 for the season.
Outdoor Track
On April 18, the H-K boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted a tri-meet against Portland and Hale Ray. Both the boys and girls came away with two victories on the day, as the boys defeated Hale Ray by a score of 126-12 and Portland by a score of 73-72 to start their dual meet season 2-0.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Alex Lara in the 800 (2:03.0), Jack Cozean in the 1600 (5:00), John Panzera in the 110 hurdles (17.3) and 300 hurdles (47.3), Tim Cavrell in the shot put (39’1”), Kevin White in the long jump (18’9”) and Jaden Fazone in the triple jump (29’2”).
The H-K girls team also went 2-0 on the day to begin their dual meet season, as they defeated Hale Ray by a score of 132-11 and beat Portland 83-66. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (12.8) and 200 (27.7), Jayani Bennett in the 100 hurdles (17.5), Delaney Aronson 300 in the hurdles (56.8), Margaret Robinson in the javelin (61’7”), Kaleigh Nelligan in the pole vault (6’6”), and Leah Chester in the long jump (15’1”) and triple jump (32’0”). The girls’ 4x400 relay team was also victorious on the afternoon to contribute valuable team points.
