Branford Softball, Boys’ Tennis Record First Win
Baseball
Hornets baseball picked up two wins last week, while posting a loss on the road. The team hosted Foran on April 17 in a 9-4 victory. They traveled to Hamden on April 19 in a 10-2 loss but bounced back on April 21, traveling to New Haven for a 7-5 win over Wilbur Cross. The team is 3-5 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis picked up its first win of the season last week, after posting back-to-back losses on the road. The team traveled to Madison on April 17 to face Daniel Hand in a 7-0 loss. On April 18, they visited Guilford in a 4-3 loss. The Hornets traveled to Wallingford to take on Lyman Hall and secured a 7-0 victory. The team is now 1-5 for the season.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse took back-to-back losses last week as their challenging season continued. The team traveled to Cheshire on April 17 in a 19-7 loss. They returned home on April 22, taking a 12-8 loss to visiting Staples. The Hornets are 2-5 for the season.
Softball
Hornets softball posted its first win of the season after recording seven straight losses in a difficult season. The team hosted Sheehan on April 17 in a 12-0 loss, before Mercy came to town on April 19 for a 14-7 loss. The Hornets traveled to Wallingford for a face-off against Lyman Hall on April 20, but fell 8-4. They turned things around on the road on April 22, taking on Career Magnet in West Haven, and recording a resounding 21-1 victory. The team is now 1-7 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis took a pair of losses last week to bring their season record to 3-3.
They hosted Guilford on April 18, taking a 1-6 loss. Peyton Gaudreau took 6-1 and 6-0 singles victories in the loss.
On April 20, the team traveled to Amity in a 2-5 loss. In singles play, Gaudreau and Hamma Omeragic each picked up two 6-4 victories.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The tough season continued for boys’ lacrosse. On April 18, the team traveled to Shelton, taking a 4-3 loss. They returned home on April 20 for a 19-10 loss against Hamden. The Hornets are now 0-9 for the season.
Golf
Branford golf traveled to Morgan on April 18 and and grabbed a 155-198 victory over the Huskies.
Outdoor Track
Branford boys’ and girls’ outdoor track hosted Cheshire and Shelton on April 18.
For the girls, Shelton defeated Branford 98-47 and Cheshire took down the Hornets by a score of 78-68. Top performances included Lucy Moran who took first place in the 1600, setting a new school record with her time of 5:04.5. Violet Marrandino won the 3200 (13:04.2) and Sarah Nwagboli and Joelle Budz claimed second in the 100 (13.4). Nwagboli also got second place in the 200 (27.3). Budz claimed second in the 300 hurdles (51.1).
The 4x100 meter relay team of Chayse Gueco, Djamilla Toukour, Zuzu Pont Strong and Nwagboli came in second place, recording a time of 53.0. The 4x400 relay team placed second as well (4:28.5) which was comprised of Nwagboli, Toukour, Anmarrah Streater and Lucy Moran. In the discus, Cheyenne Wilson claimed second place (72-1). Avery Clouse took second in the high jump (4-8) and Ella Stone claimed third in the long jump (15-10). Stone also participated in the triple jump, placing second (32-.5) and in the pole vault where she placed second (6’). An outstanding performance was given to Lucy Moran, who ran her first 1600 at BHS and ran a school record. An impressive strong finishing kick led her to victory. Avery Clouse is a newcomer to track and she qualified for states with a 4’ 8” jump.
The Branford boys came out with an 82-68 win against Cheshire and took a 91-59 loss to Shelton. Several athletes had state qualifying performances, including Colin Donahoe in the 800 (2:05); Avery Atkinson throwing the javelin 148’0”; and Enaji Muhammad in the high jump (6’2”) and the long jump (19’ 8.5”).
A windy afternoon presented a challenge to some competitors, but that didn’t stop the Branford boys from achieving some notable performances. Peter DiStasio finished first in the 400 (54.6). Ryder Kropwinicki won the 110 Hurdles (16.6). Dominick Zdunek had an impressive performance in the 800 (2:08.0). Drew Schwartz placed third in the shot put (37’5”) and the Branford Boys were dominant in the javelin: Atkinson finished second, Schwartz placed third with a personal record throw of 141’8”, and Kropwinicki and Evan Buoley rounded out the top 5. Branford also finished 1-2 in the pole vault, with Kropwinicki clearing 13’6” and Bouley at 9’.
The meet started and ended in excellent fashion for the Hornets as they won both the 4x800 relay and the 4x400 relay. The 4x800 team included Donahoe, Zdunek, Sam Copolla & Massimo Corrick (8:51) and the 4x400 featured Peter DiStasio, Zach Berner, Sean Howard & Donahoe (3:45.9). Congratulations to the Senior Hornets who celebrated their Senior Day!
