Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams dedicated the game to teammate Kevin Susi, #20, who could not attend.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse grabbed a commanding 17-3 road victory over Old Lyme on April 11. Middies Gretchen Kawecki, Laura Day, and Kendall Dobratz got the ball at center draws most of the time. The Rams defense was comprised of Weston Richards, Grace Desmond, and Maggie Ashe, along with Dobratz and Amelia Sigersmith, who alternated between positions on defense and midfield. These five stymied the Old Lyme offense with double teaming, sticks held high to block passes, and effective communication between them, creating a human wall about 15 yards in front of the goal to prevent effective shots. First half goalie Cali Morelli recorded 12 saves, and in the second half, Brianna Berdiales had six saves.
On offense, Old Saybrook’s Kawecki scored eight times and assisted three times. Lila Cadley had her best game to date with four goals. Juliette Condulis scored once and assisted twice, while Maddie Beaudoin scored twice. Dobratz and Sigersmith had one goal each, as Laura Day and Ayla D’Anna had two and one assists, respectively.
For the first time this year, all eight players in the offensive lineup were in the scoring column. Junior varsity players Kathryn DeMeulemeester and Emma Wakelee also saw action in the game. On April 13, Old Saybrook defeated Fitch on the road, 22-10. Old Saybrook’s offense was led by sophomore Gretchen Kawecki who tallied nine goals and four assists — a record score for her in a single game.
On her fourth goal, Gretchen scored her 100th goal in regular season play in high school. Gretchen also did the center draw for most of the game, a majority of which resulted in Saybrook’s possession. Laura Day was also hard to stop, as she registered three goals and five assists. Ayla D’Anna scored four times in her best game to date. Maddie Beaudoin and Juliette Condulis each scored twice and assisted once, while Kendall Dobratz had two goals.
Much credit also goes to the Rams defense, as the Falcons powered their way to the crease for a number of close-in hard shots. Some were successful, but enough were thwarted by the Rams’ defenders and goaltenders Cali Morelli and Brianna Berdiales. Cali and Brianna had three saves each. When Old Saybrook took the ball away on defense, they ran and passed the ball for a near-perfect clearing record.
