Hand Boys’ Tennis Wins Three Straight; Boys’ Lacrosse Grabs a Pair of Wins
Boys’ Tennis
Hand boys’ tennis opened the season with a 7-0 win on April 3 at Xavier. Elliott Booth defeated Tyler Fergenson 6-1, 6-3. Matt Vetter took down Jaylek Simkd 6-0, 6-2, and Andrew Seehusen grabbed a win over Nimkhji Taylor 6-2, 6-2. Marcello Gonzelvez beat Suits Paul 6-2, 6-3. For doubles, Paul Fumex/Deacon Wilkens took down Sam Marsh/AAnay Chandra 6-4, 6-1. Will Dodd/Gavin Waterman recorded a victory over Alex Chabek/Petras Paul 6-4, 6-0 and Gus Hogde/Patrick McEwen beat Gryson Hester/Will Finch 6-0, 6-2.
On April 6, the Tigers hosted North Haven and won 7-0. Elliott Booth claimed a win over Seth Tobin 6-0, 6-0. Matt Vetter defeated Minh Nguyen 6-1, 6-0 while Andrew Seehusen took down Jack Segna 6-0, 6-1. Xander Konstintino rounded out singles with a win over Parthiv Patel 6-0, 6-1. For doubles, Paul Fumax/Deacon Wilkens took down Jess Hansard/Adil Upadhyay 6-1, 6-1. Will Doss/Gavin Waterman defeated Evan Lodney/Nathan Oh 6-3, 6-0 and Trent Wiles/Patrick McEwen beat Johnathan Clin/Robert Allison 6-0, 6-1.
Hand grabbed a 7-0 road win at Hamden on April 10. Quinn Northrop (Hamden) faced Elliott Booth (Hand) in singles (1-6, 2-6). Nolan Jermain (Hamden) fell to Andrew Seehusen (Hand) 2-6, 2-6. Paras Dodd (Hamden) took a loss vs. Xander Konstintino (Hand) 3-6, 4-6, while Kaustuv Mohanty (Hamden) was defeated by Deacon Wilkins (Hand) 1-6, 1-6. For doubles, Milo Kazmierczak/Lucian Gaetjen (Hamden) lost to Paul Fumax/Matt Vetter (Hand) 0-6, 0-6. Aryan Singla/Dylan Groff (Hamden) faced Gavin Waterman/Patrick McEwen (Hand) with a score of 1-6, 2-6. Finally, Aidan DeJesus/Lance Mendoza (Hamden) fell to Gus Hodge/Aden Chorney (Hand) 0-6, 2-6.
Girls’ Tennis
Hand girls’ tennis opened the season on April 3 with a home win vs. North Haven. Freshman Loden Bradstreet won her match at 2 singles 6-2, 6-0, and sophomore Antoinette Lowy won at 3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Emma Lee fought to a 7-5, 6-1 victory at 4 singles. The 1 doubles team of senior captain Libby Rogers and sophomore Ella Helfrich won 6-3, 6-2. The 2 doubles team of junior Teagan Ariyan and sophomore Juliana Jorens prevailed with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
The Tigers then faced Cheshire at home on April 5, battling to a 3-3 tie with one match left undecided and to be continued at a later date. Winning for Hand were Loden Bradstreet at 2 singles (6-4, 6-1), Libby Rogers and Ella Helfrich at 1 doubles (6-1, 6-4), and in an epic three set match at 2 doubles, Teagan Ariyan and Juliana Jorens (4-6, 7-6, 6-4). With rain and darkness setting in, Antoinette Lowy’s match at 3 singles was suspended in the middle of the second set, causing the overall match score to remain at 3-3 until she and her opponent are able to finish playing and determine the team’s final outcome.
Baseball
The Hand baseball team started the season on April 3 with a 7-4 win on the road over North Haven. The Tigers recorded seven runs on eight hits and one error. Junior Brandon SanMarco pitched a complete game, striking out 11 batters. Troy Piascik hit a two-run homerun. Nick Antonetti went 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Vinny Benevento went 2-4 with an RBI and Ben Kuja had an RBI triple. Paul Calandrelli added a double and an RBI.
On April 5, Hand hosted Lyman Hall and fell 4-0. The Tigers recorded three hits and four errors in the game. Tai Nuzzi had two hits including a triple, and Payton Powell recorded the loss on the hill.
On April 8, Hand traveled to Fairfield Ludlowe and lost 6-4 before defeating Guilford 2-0 on the road on April 10. The Tigers recorded five hits and one error in the victory. It was an incredible pitching duel between Brandon SanMarco and Bryce Meder. SanMarco hurled a complete game shutout while striking out six batters. Paul Calandrelli had an RBI double, Vinny Benevento had an RBI single, and Jacob Rachler added two hits.
Softball
Hand softball played its first game of the season on April 3, losing to Guilford at home by a score of 5-0. On April 5, the Tigers traveled to Sacred Heart Academy and took a 13-1 loss before falling to Windsor at home on April 8 by a score of 7-3. On April 10, Hand traveled to Sheehan and lost 6-2.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Hand boys’ lacrosse team opened up the season on April 4 with a 19-4 home win vs. Foran. Sam Sisk had three goals and four assists. Will Kleine had four goals and two assists. Nick Lombardi added four goals and Alex Cushing added three. Ken Pompilli recorded one goal and one assist. Goalie Jack Orlando had 10 saves and two goals against.
The Tigers traveled to East Lyme on April 6 and grabbed a 19-7 win. Will Kleine’s seven goals and two assists and Sam Sisk’s one goal and seven assists led the way for Hand. After being up 8-5 at halftime, the Tigers outscored East Lyme 7-1 in the third quarter.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Hand girls’ lacrosse played its season opener on April 1, defeating Masuk at home by a score of 15-8. Lydia Doraz had five goals, one assist and five draw controls. Addison Kosiewitz scored six goals to go with two assists. Haley Wines added two goals and four draw controls, while Maci Pellegrino had one goal, one assist. Shawn Staak also added one goal.
On April 3, the Tigers defeated Hamden at home by a score of 17-7. Lydia Doraz led the offense with five goals and two assists with nine draw controls. Addison Kosiewitz added four goals and two assists, and Shawn Staak scored three goals to go with two assists. Haley Wines and Kelly Kilbourn contributed three goals each.
Hand then played host to Sacred Heart Academy on April 5, winning 15-8. Lydia Doraz scored seven goals and added one assist with seven draw controls. Addison Kosiewitz added four goals and one assist. Shawn Staak scored three goals and Haley Wines added one.
The Tigers traveled to Weston on April 8 and lost by a score of 9-3.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Hand boys’ volleyball team opened the season on April 4 with a 3-0 home loss vs. Masuk. On April 5, the Tigers took down Stamford at home by a score of 3-0, and fell on the road to Xavier on April 6, 3-0. On April 10, Hand traveled to Norwalk and took a 3-0 loss.
