The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team claimed its third state championship in program history when the Nighthawks earned a 2-1 overtime victory versus Woodstock Academy in the final of the Division II State Tournament at Quinnipiac University on March 21. Senior Alex Petersen netted the game-winning goal in OT to lift North Haven to the historic win.
Following a scoreless first period, Woodstock Academy posted the opening goal of the game during the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third. With time running out in the contest, senior Tommy Guidone scored for the Nighthawks to tie it up at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
With 9:25 remaining in the OT period, Petersen took a shot and sent it past the Woodstock goalie to give North Haven a 2-1 win that secured the Division II state title for Head Coach Chris Avena’s squad. North Haven completed the 2022-’23 season with an overall record of 24-2, finishing on a 12-game win streak. The Nighthawks reached the Division II state final for the second-straight year after having captured the SCC/SWC Division II crown for the third-consecutive campaign.
North Haven’s other state titles came in 1980 and 2004. This marked the program’s fifth appearance in the Division II championship game.
The athletes on the North Haven boys’ ice hockey team are senior captains Owen Quick, Will Sullivan, and Joey Taft; seniors Andre Ohanyan, Alex Petersen, Tommy Guidone, Connor Keaney, Ethan Buck, and Bryce Petersen; juniors Nolan Cole, Jake Donovan, Jaxson O’Brien, Lleyton Geremia, Ben Gilbert, and Jack Keaney; sophomores Logan Ohanyan, William Keaney, and Bryce Montabana; and freshmen Paul Mastriano, Andrew Porto, Bryce Mastriano, Mark Guidone, Gavin Knauft, and Christopher Consorte.
