North Branford Boys’ Ice Hockey Skates to Semifinals; Girls’ Basketball Falls in States
Boys’ Ice Hockey
North Branford boys’ ice hockey began Division II State Tournament play as the #12 seed. They pulled off an upset against #5 and defending champions Wethersfield in a tight 5-4 contest on March 7.
CJ Sherwood scored the first goal of the game for the T-Birds, with Jack Maley on the assist. Jake Pedersen and Sherwood each knocked in an unassisted score. Maley scored off of a rebound on a shot by Pedersen, with Sherwood on the secondary assist. Maley also scored a Power Play goal in the second period, assisted by Pedersen and Sherwood. Senior captain Aidan Geist made several game-saving stops in net.
North Branford then took on the East Haven co-op team in a quarterfinal matchup on March 10, walking away with a 3-1 victory. Sherwood got the Thunderbirds on the board in the second period, with Connor Stoner on the assist. Michael Matteo hammered in a score with a 5-on-3 advantage for North Branford off of a rebound on a shot attempt by Pedersen. Colin Augur sealed the game for the T-Birds with a goal assisted by Stoner.
Girls’ Basketball
The Thunderbirds girls’ basketball season came to an end on March 8, where they fell to #3 seed Somers by a score of 74-36 in the quarterfinal round of the Class S State Tournament,
