Valley Boys’ Hoops Takes Two Losses; Co-op Girls’ Hockey Squad Grabs Two Wins
Boys’ Basketball
The Valley Regional boys’ basketball team took two defeats last week to move to 9-10 with one game remaining in the regular season. The Warriors dropped contests against Cromwell and St. Paul in recent action.
On Feb. 15, Valley hosted Cromwell and took a 53-44 defeat versus the Panthers. Cromwell held a 12-9 lead after the first quarter and had a 27-19 halftime advantage over Valley. The Panthers went on to win the third quarter by a 16-12 margin to increase their lead to 43-31 entering the fourth. Valley outscored Cromwell 13-10 during the final frame, but was unable to come all the way back.
Senior James Marsden scored 14 points to go with 5 rebounds and 3 steals for Valley. Junior DiAngelo Jean-Pierre had 13 with 4 assists and 2 steals in the loss. Junior Sam Hutchinson scored 8 points, while senior Simon Partyka had 6 points with 4 steals for the Warriors.
Then on Feb. 17, the Warriors played St. Paul for another home game and were edged out by the Falcons by a 42-41 score. Valley was up 13-10 after the first quarter, but the Falcons outscored the Warriors 17-9 in the second quarter to take a 27-22 lead into halftime. St. Paul won the third quarter 7-6 to make it 34-28 entering the fourth. The Warriors outscored St. Paul 13-8 during the final frame, but ultimately took the one-point loss.
Marsden had 11 points with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks for Valley Regional in the contest. Partyka scored 10 points and grabbed 3 steals, while junior Andrew Yermenson scored 9 points to go with 2 steals. Jean-Pierre had 5 points with 4 assists and 5 steals for the Warriors. Hutchinson scored 4 points, collected 7 rebounds, and also had 2 steals.
Valley will finish its regular season by playing East Hampton this week. The Warriors have qualified for both the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Division IV State Tournament.
Girls’ Gymnastics
The Valley Regional girls’ gymnastics squad competed against three teams in a quad-meet at Polson Middle School on Madison on Feb. 17. The Warriors posted a team score of 124.05 points to earn a win versus Mercy (120.45) while also taking losses to Hand (139.3) and the H-K/Morgan/Westbrook co-op squad at the meet.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The H-K/Morgan/Valley co-op boys’ swimming and diving team split a pair of matchups by defeating West Haven and taking a loss to Lyman Hall-Coginchaug last week.
On Feb. 14, the squad claimed a 96-76 road win over West Haven at West Haven High School. Then on Feb. 17, the Cougars hosted Lyman Hall-Coginchaug and lost the contest by a 92-69 score.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand/H-K/Valley/Branford/Coginchaug/Old Lyme (H/H-K/V/B/C/OL) co-op girls’ ice hockey squad notched two victories and then took a loss last week to improve its record to 3-12 on the season.
On Feb. 16, H/H-K/V/B/C/OL claimed a 2-1 road win versus Amity-Cheshire-North Haven at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The following day, the team faced the Masuk co-op squad on the road and triumphed by a 3-2 score in overtime at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Then on Feb. 19, the Tigers hosted the Hamden co-op and took a 3-0 defeat at Northford Ice Pavilion.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) co-op boys’ ice hockey team played one game last week when the Yellowjackets hosted North Haven on Feb. 19. The Yellowjackets took a 5-2 loss versus the Nighthawks at Northford Ice Pavilion to put their overall record at 9-6-1 on the season.
EH-M-V-EH-OL has four games remaining on its regular-season schedule. The Yellowjackets, who have qualified for the Division II State Tournament, will close out the regular season with contests against the Eastern CT Eagles, Hand, Watertown-Pomperaug, and Westhill-Stamford, the last game of which is the team’s regular-season finale at Northford Ice Pavilion on Tuesday, March 1.
