The Chiclettes Kick Off Summer Concert Series
Fans of 1960s girl groups rejoice! The music of Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, and others will fill the Town Green when the Guilford Summer Concert Series kicks off with a performance by The Chiclettes on Sunday, July 24.
The series also includes Thursday evening concerts at Jacobs Beach, but no matter the venue, Park and Recreation DIrector Rick Maynard says these free family events are a can’t miss.
“The Jacobs Beach concerts are great, I feel like I’m in Aruba or Bermuda listening to music on the beach,” Maynard said. “It is such a greet ambiance. The beach, the water it’s just great.”
The playground and splash pad at Jacobs Beach are open during each of the concerts, and Maynard reminded concert-goers to bring their chairs, blankets, and towels for these shows.
Maynard added that the concerts of the Green have become a must-do for patrons and for the entertainers themselves.
“All the bands this year are really great. There’s a wide variety we are presenting, all of it danceable and fun,” said Maynard. “There is a lot of competition with bands to play on our Green. Several of the groups have told us in past years that every band in the State wants to play the Guilford Green. There are a lot of great greens in our State, and I wouldn’t want to make a claim that we are the best, but we have a real jewel here, and it’s a great venue. These are really special evenings.”
The town isn’t scheduling any food trucks or vendors, but it is likely that food vendors will be on site, Maynard said. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own picnic provisions and settle in for great live music.
“There is just something magical about live music outdoors in the summer,” Maynard said. “It is such a great time to be outdoors at six or seven o’clock. The music is fun. A concert on the town green is kind of old-fashioned America. There just really is something magical about live outdoor music-whatever it is, and doing that on our iconic green is exceptional.”
The Sunday Concerts on The Green are from 6:30 8 p.m., and the schedule features The Chiclettes on July 24, All Summer Long (a tribute to the Beach Boys) on July 31, The Magic of Motown on Aug. 7, Dizzy Fish (1970s hits) on Aug. 21, and Beau Bolery (a tribute to Steely Dan) on Aug. 28. In the event of rain, the Sunday concerts will be held in September.
The Jacobs Beach Concerts are on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the schedule includes Mass-Conn-Fusion on July 28, Leaf Jumpers on Aug. 18, and Cover 2 Cover on Aug. 25.
