Indians' Boys' Track Improves to 10-1
The North Haven boys' outdoor track program hosted a quad-meet on April 30 and, despite dropping a 105-45 decision to Amity, the Indians earned a 147-3 win against O'Brien Tech and a 128-22 victory versus division foe East Haven to improve to 10-1 on the campaign.
Senior John Spencer was a two-time winner for Steve Celmer's squad, winning the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.2, along with prevailing in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 41.5. Also notching first-place finishes were Matt Marcarelli in the shot put (51-9) and fellow senior Steve Cofrancesco in the triple jump (40-6).
Placing second for North Haven were Marcus Spignesi in the 100-meter dash at 11.7, as well as Raymond Rich-Fiondella in the 1,600 with a mark of 4:47.8.
Coach Celmer was additionally pleased with his team's showing in the 3,200 as five Indians' competitors ran times under 11 minutes. Those athletes were Fiondella (10:21.3), Chris DelVecchio (10:29.9), Dave Goodrich (10:37.4), Ryan Brennan (10:51.5), and Jesse Morrow (10:56.8). Brennan's time marked the second-fastest for a freshman in program history.
"We had no illusions going into the meet about beating Amity," said Coach Celmer. "Our goal was to use this quality competition to get us ready for the big meet against Branford for the division title next week and that we did."
Indeed, North Haven will travel to Branford to face the defending Oronoque champion Hornets at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Those two teams will see each other again at the SCC West Sectional Championship at Amity at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13.
