I did not expect this Pulitzer-Prize winning historian to also be a proud Texan, a land where Juneteenth originates. She deftly lays out the complicated origin, which includes Native Americans and the Alamo, with a clear explanation of the history of Black people in America. Brilliant, with a story-telling style narrative, this book clarifies and illuminates America’s history. I look forward to celebrating Juneteenth!
