Hand Boys’ Hoops Opens 2-0; Wrestling Team Earns Win Versus Law
Boys’ Basketball
The Hand boys’ basketball team came away with a sweep of two matchups during the first week of the 2021-’22 season. The Tigers earned a convincing win versus Foran and then edged out Greenwich to begin the year with a record of 2-0.
Hand notched a 61-35 home victory over Foran in its season opener on Dec. 16. The Tigers held a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and led the Lions 30-17 at halftime. Hand went on to outscore Foran in both the third (14-4) and fourth (17-14) quarters to pull away for the 25-point win.
Senior Tyler Favre scored 14 points for the Tigers in the victory. Fellow senior Trey Adams had 11 points on the night.
Senior Morgan Veth scored eight points, junior Hudson Geremia had seven points, and junior Kyle Hoffman had six points in the victory. Senior Jack Balletto, junior Jacob Rachler, and freshman Chase Geremia added five points apiece.
On Dec. 18, the Tigers hosted Greenwich for a non-conference game at Daniel Hand High School. Hand won the contest by the final score of 47-44 on a 3-pointer by Hudson Geremia at the buzzer.
Geremia scored 18 points for the Tigers in the win. Favre had 13 points, and Adams added seven points on the night.
Wrestling
The Hand wrestling team traveled to Milford to take on Jonathan Law in its first meet in two seasons last week. The Tigers opened the year at 1-0 after claiming a 48-28 victory against the Lawmen on Dec. 15.
Sophomore Braeden Simmons won his match via pinfall at the 3:11 mark in the 120-pound division for the Tigers. Junior Charles Wahl pinned his opponent in 42 seconds in the 126-pound bout. Sophomore Connor Balletto won his 132-pound bout by way of pin in 22 seconds.
Senior Cameron Chieppo needed just 19 seconds to win via pin in the 152-pound matchup. Senior John Portley prevailed by pin in 31 seconds in the 170-pound division. Fellow senior Charlie Keogh pinned his opponent at the 3:24 mark of the 182-pound bout to Hand win the match.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Hand boys’ ice hockey team played two games during the first week of its winter season. The Tigers took a defeat against Greenwich and then lost to Watertown-Pomperaug to open up the year at 1-1.
On Dec. 13, Hand took a 4-0 road loss to Greenwich at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink. Then on Dec. 18, the Tigers were back on the road to face Watertown-Pomperaug and took a 3-0 loss at the Taft School.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley-Old Lyme (H-C-V-OL) girls’ ice hockey team took defeats in its first three games of the season for an early record of 0-3 on the year.
H-C-V-OL took a 3-2 home loss to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy in its season opener at the Northford Ice Pavilion on Dec. 8. Then on Dec. 15, the Tigers took a 6-0 loss against Stamford-Westhill-Staples in a road game at Terry Conners Ice Rink. Two days later, the Tigers hosted Guilford and took a 6-3 defeat at Northford Ice Pavilion.
