North Haven Boys’ Track Starts Off with a Win; Boys’ Lacrosse Gets First Victory with Greco
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team started up its season by competing against Sheehan in a road meet on April 17. North Haven won the contest by an 84-66 score.
Senior Patrick Rourke took first place in both the 800 (2:18.6), the 1,600 (4:56.7), and the triple jump (37-0) for North Haven. Fellow senior Anthony Vigliotto won the javelin (123-3) and also finished first for the discus (115-2).
Sophomore Matt Crispi claimed first in the 110 hurdles (19.2), senior Joe O’Connor won the pole vault (7-6), and sophomore Ethan Anderson took first place in the shot put (42-6.5). North Haven’s 4x800 relay of senior Aaron Barbiero, junior Kevin Rourke, senior Nick Howlett, and Patrick Rourke recorded a time of 9:04.7 to take first place.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team earned its first win with new Head Coach Peter Greco when the team defeated Shelton in its season opener last week. North Haven went on to take a loss against Fairfield Warde for a 1-1 start to the 2021 campaign.
On April 12, North Haven was on the road to face Shelton for its first game of the year. Coach Greco’s club claimed a 10-1 victory over the Gaels to start the season on a positive note.
Then on April 17, North Haven hosted Fairfield Warde for its home opener. The team took a 15-5 defeat versus Fairfield Warde at North Haven Middle School.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team lost all three of its games last week to move to 0-4 on the season.
On April 13, North Haven hosted Guilford and took a 19-1 defeat at North Haven Middle School. Then on April 16, Head Coach Bernie Pellegrino’s team took a 17-2 loss versus Hand in a road game at the Surf Club in Madison. The next day, North Haven was on the road to face Fairfield Warde and dropped a 7-6 decision.
Girls’ Tennis
The North Haven girls’ tennis team stands at 2-2 after winning two of its three matchups last week. North Haven notched 7-0 shutouts against Mercy and Foran before taking a 6-1 loss to Hand in recent action.
North Haven started off its week by earning a 7-0 home win over Mercy on April 12. Junior Ally Vollero claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven. Junior Taylor Morris earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles; sophomore Risa Tobin prevailed by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 3 singles; and freshman Chandler Morris netted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to help Head Coach Bob Migliorini’s squad get the victory.
In doubles action, North Haven’s No. 1 tandem of seniors Megan Kell and Nadia Kavgaci posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The No. 2 team of seniors Kaitlyn Ha and Sophia DelVecchio triumphed by a 6-0, 6-1 score, while North Haven’s No. 3 duo of juniors Zeena Mohamed and Noelle Carmody earned a 6-2, 6-2 win to complete the sweep.
Two days later, North Haven played a road match against Foran and claimed another 7-0 victory. North Haven swept singles play as Vollero (6-1, 6-0), Taylor Morris (6-1, 6-2), Tobin (6-3, 6-1), and Chandler Morris (6-2, 6-2) were all victorious in their matches.
North Haven also won all three doubles contests versus Foran. The team of Kell and Kavgaci posted an 8-4 win, Ha and DelVecchio notched a 9-8 (8-6) victory in match that came down to a tiebreaker, and the team of Mohamed and Carmody earned an 8-1 win for North Haven.
Then on April 16, North Haven hosted Hand and lost to the Tigers by a 6-1 score at North Haven Athletic Complex. Chandler Morris earned a 6-3, 6-3 win for North Haven in the No. 4 singles match.
Boys’ Tennis
The North Haven boys’ tennis team took two defeats in last week’s action and now has a record of 0-3 on the year.
North Haven started off its week by taking a 7-0 loss in a road match against Notre Dame-West Haven on April 14. Three days later, North Haven hosted Cheshire and lost the contest by a 7-0 score.
Baseball
The North Haven baseball team lost two contests last week to move to 1-2 on the year. Head Coach Bob DeMayo’s squad took a 3-2 loss to Branford and then lost an 8-4 decision versus Hand in last week’s matchups.
North Haven started off its week by playing a road game against Branford on April 14. North Haven had a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning, but Branford scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the seventh to come away with the walk-off win.
Senior Cole Zalegowski doubled home junior Ty Rooney and junior Owen Pincince to account for North Haven’s two runs against Branford. Rooney had a single with a walk, while Pincince drew two walks in the game.
Senior JJ Mazzaro got the start on the mound and turned in a solid effort for North Haven. Mazzaro allowed one run on four hits to go with eight strikeouts in five innings pitched.
On April 17, North Haven played a road game at Hand and took an 8-4 defeat against the Tigers. Hand held a 5-4 edge over North Haven entering the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Tigers scored three runs to take a four-run advantage.
Junior Owen Pincince went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base for North Haven. Senior Cole Zalegowski was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Junior Mike Anquillare hit a triple and scored a run.
