An elderly woman struck by a car in the Stop & Shop parking lot Thursday Jan. 12 has died. The victim, Marjorie Ehrenfreund, 84, was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries, according to the Madison Police Department.

Police reported that at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 12, the Madison Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call about the accident. The driver of the motor vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with investigators.

Police said Ehrenfreund appeared to have suffered from broken bones and possibly head trauma.

As of Jan. 13, Madison Police Captain Joseph Race said officers were still speaking to the driver and witnesses at the scene. Members of the South Central Regional Traffic Unit supported Madison officers with the investigation.

“They are still going to proceed through the whole process,” he said. “When it is a fatal accident, we do tend to look into each parties previous 24 hours leading up to the accident so that makes it a little more extensive.”

Investigating pedestrian related accidents or deaths has become an unfortunate reality of police work over the last couple of months according to Race. In December 2016 alone, five pedestrians were killed in a 24-hour period across the state.

“Everyone needs to slow down and pay attention,” said Race. “Whether it is people walking, people driving—people are not focused on what they are doing and that is leading to some of these incidents. It is not necessarily texting. We are just so busy, so wrapped up, and in such a hurry, and we just need to slow down and focus on the task at hand. We have had so many pedestrians struck and killed over the last few months and it is a problem.”
