Not a Done Deal
First Selectman Tom Banisch is telling us that we must choose between four high-density housing developments for Academy School and the five acres of open space behind it. Most folks think this is a done deal, but it’s not. The multi-million-dollar private development proposals solicited by the town, first presented to the public in early February, are simply that: proposals. We have not gone to town meeting and the referendum is not set.
It is essential that our elected officials explain to Madison residents that no decision has been made and there is time for public input and a voice in what goes to referendum.
While there is little doubt that everyone wants to do something with Academy School, there is great doubt that anyone expected or wants to lose the only five acres of undeveloped land owned by the town in the heart of our village to 79 condos and townhouses.
What we need, and what it appears the majority of residents prefer based on every survey and public hearing for the past 10 years, is a building-only solution.
If we are willing to sell the Academy building and five acres to a developer for a pittance (tax revenues that do not substantially lower the mill rate), why not offer the building only and save our land?
