Old Saybrook Girls’ Indoor Track Excels at States; Boys’ Basketball Goes 1-1
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op split the week, earning a victory over Daniel Hand and stumbling in a tough overtime loss against Guilford. The team hosted Hand on Feb. 6 in the 3-0 victory. Goal scorers for the Yellowjackets were John D’Albero (two unassisted goals) and Allan Schroeter (unassisted). Jon-Paul Garea recorded 26 saves in net while allowing no goals.
The team then set their sights on Guilford on Feb. 8, ultimately taking a 6-5 loss in overtime. In the contest, Michael Savo scored a goal assisted by Allan Schroeter at the 4:11 mark of the first period. In the second period, goals were scored by Savo (assisted by Schroeter again), Savo (recording a hat trick, assisted by D’Albero), and Nick Perillo (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey and D’Albero). In period three, Savo scored again, this time unassisted. Garea allowed six goals but recorded 38 saves. The Yellowjackets are now 4-7-1.
Boys’ Basketball
Rams boys’ basketball split the week, recording a win and a narrow loss. The team traveled to Durham on Feb. 7 to take on Coginchaug in a 65-64 loss. Aaron Tolve had 26 points and seven rebounds, Auggie Albert had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Josh Lech had 14 points and five rebounds. The team returned home on Feb. 10 for a 34-26 win over Old Lyme. They are now 12-6 for the season.
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ basketball tallied a win and a loss last week to bring their record to 11-8 for the season. The team hosted Coginchaug on Feb. 7 in a 50-27 defeat. They bounced back on Feb. 10, hosting Old Lyme for a convincing 52-26 win.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op took a loss on the road last week, falling to the Hamden co-op 5-0 on Feb. 8. The team is 10-6 for the season.
Indoor Track
The girls’ indoor track team placed third overall at the Class S State Championship on Feb. 9, while the boys placed 10th. Avery Rueckert finished in third place in the girls’ 300 meters (41.73). Catherine Minegar (3:11.49) took second place in the 1000 meters, while Lauren Dobratz took seventh (9.45) in the 55 meter hurdles. The 4x200 relay team of Abigail Colella, Rueckert, Madelyn Beaudoin, and Talia Bauer took second place with a team time of 1:50.59. Dobratz also grabbed third place in the high jump (4-10.00). Christina Grace (J9-00.00) placed fifth in the pole vault. For the boys, Parker Cook took third in the 1000 (2:43.06). Tyler Milardo-Denler took fourth in the pole vault (11-00.00), and Bardh Thaci (49-10.50) took second in the shot put.
