Catharine Sullivan Walker
On Oct. 30, Catharine Sullivan Walker of Guilford, passed away surrounded by her loving family. Her beloved husband of 65 years, Frederick E. Walker, predeceased her by four years. She was the devoted mother of Catharine “Kim” (Torbjörn) Bergstrom of Sweden, Elizabeth “Beth” (Edward) Phillips of Marlton, New Jersey, and Frederick Christopher (Candace) Walker of Madison; grandmother of the late Per Christopher Bergstrom, Frederick Timothy Bergstrom, Anne-Sophie Larsson (Torbjörn), Edward Phillips (Tara), Hope Phillips, Christopher Walker Jr., Blake Walker (Stephanie), Taylor Walker (Rebecca), Spencer Walker (Rachel) and Chase Walker; great-grandmother to Norabelle, Celine, Hugo, Maisie, Esme, Shay, and Keira. Catharine was born on May 31, 1930, to the Rev. Richard Godfrey Sullivan and Olive Middleton Sullivan. The second of their four children, she is also survived by her brother William Cuyler Sullivan of Wrightstown, New Jersey.
As a lifelong learner, Catharine obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the New Jersey State Teachers College and taught fifth grade. Later in life, she returned to college for a degree in art history from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, followed by a master’s degree in art history from Wesleyan University in Middletown.
Catharine was both a devoted wife and mother. She and Fred shared a passion for the theater and international travel and often traveled throughout Scandinavia and Europe, to visit with her oldest daughter and her children who live in Sweden. As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she shared her passion for the arts with them all and especially as it related to her work as a docent at the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven.
Private family services will be held this spring in Ewing, New Jersey, where Catharine and Fred will rest eternally together. The Hawley Lincoln Memorial, Guilford is in charge of arrangements.
