Cook Places Third for Old Saybrook in State Cross Country Meet
Boys’ Cross Country
Junior Parker Cook recorded a third-place performance when he competed for the Old Saybrook boys’ cross country team at the Class S State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 29. The Rams finished in seventh place by scoring 257 points as a team at the meet.
Cook crossed the finish line with a time of 17:05 on his way to claiming third for Rams in the Class SS State Championship. Junior Nwang Choegyal finished in 32nd place on behalf of Old Saybrook in states.
Senior Logan Worman ran a time of 19:33 to finish in 47th place for Old Saybrook at states. Junior Gabriel Rutan finished in 80th place (20:32), while sophomore Jack Lowy came in 106th place (21:27). Sophomore Everett Miller finished in 119th place (22:06), and junior Adrian Garcia finished in 144th (23:16) for the Rams at the meet.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook girls’ cross country team finished in sixth place as a squad at the Class S State Championship meet last week. The state competition was hosted at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.
Junior Carlina Castro led the way for Old Saybrook by claiming 13th place in the Class S State Championship. Castro posted a time of 21:39 on her way to finishing in 13th place on behalf of the Rams.
Senior Catherine Minegar took 22nd place with a mark of 22:29 for the Rams at states. Senior Vikki Carcia finished in 46th place (23:51), freshman Cassandra Garcia placed 55th (24:41), and sophomore Cat Pamment finished in 67th place (25:26) for Old Saybrook.
Girls’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team took defeats in its last two games of the regular season, but then bounced back to grab a win against Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Rams have an overall record of 6-8-3 as they get ready to face Cromwell in the Shoreline semifinals this week.
On Oct. 24, the Rams hosted Old Lyme and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Wildcats at Old Saybrook High School. Three days later, the Rams were on the road to face Morgan and lost to the Huskies by a 2-0 score in their regular-season finale.
Then on Oct. 29, No. 6 seed Old Saybrook hit the road to face No. 3 Old Lyme in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament and blanked the Wildcats by a 1-0 score. Senior Avery Rueckert scored the lone goal of the game on an assist from fellow senior Juliette Condulis in the first half to lift the Rams to the win. Sophomore goalie Kylie Lake got the shutout in net for Old Saybrook.
Old Saybrook will play at No. 2 seed Cromwell in the conference semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 3:45 p.m. With a victory, the Rams would advance to the title game at Portland High School to face the winner of top-seeded Morgan and No. 4 seed Portland on Friday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. After Shorelines, Old Saybrook will be competing in the Class S State Tournament that starts on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Boys’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team hit the road to play a pair of away games during the last week of regular-season action. The Rams notched a win over Fitch and then took a loss to East Hampton to finish with an overall record of 13-1-2 for the regular season.
The Rams began last week by notching a 4-0 road victory against Fitch on Oct. 24. Senior Cameron DeAngelo scored 2 goals for Old Saybrook in the win. Senior Bradley Kulmann and junior Brayden Cody added 1 goal apiece. Junior Kevin DeCapua had 3 assists on the day to help the Rams win the game. Junior goalie London Sweeney made 8 saves in net for the shutout.
Then on Oct. 28, Old Saybrook was back on the road to face East Hampton and lost to the Bellringers by a 3-2 score. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Rams rallied with goals by DeAngelo and DeCapua to make it 2-2 with 7:45 left in the contest. However, 20 seconds later, East Hampton was awarded a penalty kick and made it to retake the lead at 3-2. Sweeney made 15 saves to keep Old Saybrook in the game.
Old Saybrook has the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and earned a bye through the quarterfinals. The Rams are hosting No. 3 seed Morgan in the semis on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. If Old Saybrook wins, it will move on to the Shoreline final to face the winner of top-seeded East Hampton and No. 4 seed Old Lyme at Portland High School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The Rams shared the conference title with Morgan last year after battling the Huskies to a 1-1 draw in the Shoreline championship game.
Following the conclusion of the Shoreline Conference Tournament, three-time defending champion Old Saybrook will compete in the Class S State Tournament that gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Field Hockey
The Old Saybrook field hockey team closed out the 2022 regular season by playing a road game against Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 27. The Rams claimed a 1-0 win against versus the Cougars at H-K High School to finish with an overall record of 11-4-1 for the regular season this year.
Old Saybrook scored the game-winning goal with no time left in regulation to edge out H-K in its regular-season finale. Freshman Kendall Dobratz netted the goal on an assist by sophomore Lila Cadley. Senior goalkeepers Brianna Berdiales and Kate Molesky both made 2 saves in the cage to combine for the shutout for the Rams.
Old Saybrook is the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and will face No. 3 seed Valley Regional for a semifinal game at the Indian River Complex in Clinton at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1. If the Rams prevail, they will play the winner of No. 1 seed North Branford and No. 4 Westbrook-Old Lyme in the championship game on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Indian River Complex. Following Shorelines, Old Saybrook will play in the Class S State Tournament that begins on Monday, Nov. 7.
Football
The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team had a bye week for last week. The Rams’ next game is a home matchup against the Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman co-op squad at Old Saybrook High School on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. OS-W enters the game with a record of 0-6, and the Patriots have an overall mark of 0-7.
After that, OS-W is playing a road game versus Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby at Windsor Locks High School on Friday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 and will then be back on the road to face Valley-Regional-Old Lyme in Deep River at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17. The Rams will then host Morgan for their last game of the year on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. at Old Saybrook High School.
