Janet (Maginniss) Moffat, longtime resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully on Nov. 28 at Guilford House. The beloved wife of the late John Hugh Moffat, Mrs. Moffat was born in West Haven on Feb. 21, 1931, daughter of the late Christopher and Lily (Forsyth) Maginniss.
She was the loving mother of David J. Moffat and his wife Beth of Guilford and Nancy Miessau and her husband Kenneth of Westbrook. She is also survived by three grandchildren, whom she loved and enjoyed the company of, John Moffat (Caroline), Kevin Moffat (Syndia) and Joseph Miessau (Jackie); and great-grandchild Miles Miessau. She was the sister of Christopher Maginniss (Eleanor) and Kenneth Maginniss (Patricia) of Guilford and their children.
Mrs. Moffat is a graduate of West Haven High School and Stone Business College. She also attended New Haven State Teachers College (now Southern Connecticut State University). She was a very active member of the Episcopal Church. She was a member of Christ Church, West Haven, St. John’s Church, Vernon, Christ Episcopal Church, Norwich, and Christ Episcopal Church, Guilford. She was a church school teacher for more than 30 years.
Janet was a member of the Diocesan Board of the Episcopal Churchwomen of Connecticut from 1970 to 1980. She was diocesan president from 1977 to 1980. She was a delegate to the Triennial Meeting of the Women of the Church in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1973, Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1976, and Denver, Colorado, in 1979 and was a member of the Planning Committee for the Triennial Meeting in Minneapolis in 1976 and the administration of the Triennial Meeting in Denver. She was a member of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut from 1985 to 1989. She was also a member of Diocesan Committee, Venture in Mission, and the Planning Committee for the Bicentennial of the Diocese of Connecticut in 1984 and a member of the Board of Episcopal Social Service and the National Evangelism Committee of the Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Companions of the Holy Cross.
She worked as office manager for more than 30 years at Tactical Communications, Inc., in Guilford.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband children and grandchildren throughout the United States, Canada, many countries in Europe and the United Kingdom. She and her husband also traveled to Israel, Russia, Egypt, China, South America, and Antarctica.
Friends are invited to calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Dec. 4, at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park Street, Guilford. Burial will follow in Alder Brook Cemetery, 375 Boston Street, Guilford.
